How has it been 30 years already? It's hard to believe but on Monday, Aug. 1, MTV will turn three decades old! As the cable network plans to celebrate its milestone anniversary, iVillage looks back at our Top 10 most memorable moments from its history -- Britney, Michael Jackson and more!
1. On Aug. 1, 1981 at 12:01 a.m, MTV launches with this image of the Apollo 11, followed by a video for The Buggles song "Video Killed the Radio Star."
2. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video debuts at midnight on Dec. 2, 1983. The 14-minute video was so popular with viewers that for several days, MTV played it twice every hour.
3. In November 1993, Nirvana films a pared-down and soulful concert for MTV Unplugged. Six months later, when Kurt Cobain dies tragically at the age of 27, the network plays the special repeatedly.
4. On March 17, 1994, doofus cartoon characters Beavis and Butt-Head watch the Michael Bolton video for his 1989 hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You." They mistake it for a coffee commercial.
5. On Nov. 3, 1994, The Real World: San Francisco airs the season's penultimate episode, in which HIV-positive Pedro Zamora exchanges vows with Sean Sasser in a commitment ceremony in the loft. On Nov. 11, Zamora succumbs to AIDS.

9. During the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in September, Taylor Swift wins the award for best female video for "You Belong with Me." The hip-hop star is still living that moment down.

Get ready for the Book of Gaga!
Grand Central Publishing announced Thursday that it will release the book Lady Gaga, filled with over 350 color and black-and-white photos of the eccentric songstress.
Fashion photographer Terry Richardson followed the singer for 10 months between Aug. 2010 and Feb. 2011, snapping shots of her for the new project. Documented in that time period was Gaga's Monster Ball tour and the recording of her album "Born This Way."
The book is set for release on Nov. 22.

Now that every soldier with an iPhone has decided to invite a celebrity to the Marine Corps Ball, we can't expect them all to say yes -- but Scarlett Johansson has shown how to say "no" with class. Johansson was asked to the event by Sgt. Dustin L. Williams, who was no doubt inspired by the successful efforts of his fellow Marines to bring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. "Recently I noticed in the media that a lot of Marines have been asking celebrities to the ball," says Sgt. Williams, as he gets dressed while "Eye of the Tiger" plays in the background. "So I was thinking, if I could ever ask anybody to the ball, who would it be? I mean, obviously they need to be beautiful, classy... who would it be?"
The video then cuts to a photo of Johansson in an evening gown, as the song "When A Man Loves a Woman" begins to play. Cute!
Though the 26-year-old actress declined his invitation, she was obviously charmed by the video -- and sent him a token of her affection, in the form of fancy champagne!
"I feel incredibly honored to have been invited to the Marine Corps Ball by Sgt. Dustin L. Williams," Johansson declared in a statement. "Not only does Sgt. Williams deserve recognition for his bravery, selflessness and dedication to the United States and its people, but he also displays a cheeky talent for filmmaking."
She then addressed her would-be date directly. "Sgt. Williams unfortunately, due to prior commitments, I will not be able to attend the ball with you this year, but I am sending you a case of Moët and Chandon with gratitude," writes the actress. "In my absence, I raise a glass to you and all the men and women of the U.S. Marine Corps, past and present, in thanks for your continued commitment to preserving the safety of our nation."
Okay, so Sgt. Williams doesn't get to make an entrance with his movie-star crush -- but a personal message and a case of champagne is a pretty sweet consolation gift!
Kunis was the first celebrity to take the YouTube bait, and the actress says she has cleared her schedule to attend the Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, N.C. Her Friends with Benefits costar Timberlake, who pressured Kunis into saying "yes," has also tentatively accepted an invitation from a female Marine in Virginia to attend the ball in Washington, D.C.
But Johansson isn't the first celeb to decline, either. Betty White, who was asked to the ball by Sgt. Ray Lewis, sweetly sent her regrets earlier this month. Stepping out for another royal wedding celebration, Prince William and Kate Middleton were spotted arriving at Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall?s pre-wedding soiree on Friday (July 29).
The beautiful husband and wife were both dressed oh-so-elegantly as usual as the climbed aboard the Royal Yacht among the other wedding guests.
Tomorrow, Prince William and Kate will attend his cousin?s small wedding ceremony which is taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland.

During an appearance on Howard Stern's radio show this week, Crystal Harris said she wasn't attracted to Hugh Hefner, she never saw him naked and they only had sex once, with it lasting for like "two seconds."
Now, the busty blonde has something to tell her former fiance: My bad!

Singer Lauryn Hill is tired of the false rumors about her new baby boy (born July 23) and her relationship -- so she decided to clear things up by dropping a bombshell on Twitter. For days, gossip columns have been buzzing that Hill's longtime partner Rohan Marley dumped her while she was pregnant with their sixth child. Now Hill, 36, reveals that this isn't the case -- because Marley is not the father of her new baby boy.
"Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child," writes the former Fugees frontwoman. "We have had long periods of separation over the years but our five children together remain a joy to both of us." If you read between the lines there, Hill is saying that her sixth child is not Marley's.
Earlier in the week, Marley implied the very same thing, telling Twitter congratulators that he was "forwarding all well wishes to Ms. Hill on the birth of her new son" -- the operative phrase there being "her new son." On Tuesday, he tweeted about the gossip, saying, "People would rather listen to gossip, than hear from the actual individuals. Some people just don't want the truth."
Both Marley and Hill are urging their fans not to judge them based on rumors and misinformation.
"Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning," writes Hill in her statement. "To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form the WRONG conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason on defend and preserve our right to it."
"The Truth Maybe An Offense, But Its Not A Sin," adds Marley on his Twitter. "Learn To Live And Let Love."
Rohan, the fourth son of reggae legend Bob Marley, recently has been linked to Victoria's Secret model Isabeli Fontana. Though he and Fontana spend a lot of time tweeting back and forth, Marley also took to Twitter to deny that he would cheat on Hill with another woman.
"Ms. Hill is the mother of my children, whom I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for," Marley tweeted on Saturday. "I would never do that."
Marley and Hill are the parents of Zion, 14, Selah, 13, Johsua, 9, John, 8, and Sarah, 3. Hill has not released the name of her newborn son -- or dropped any clues as to the identity of his father.

I've been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There's also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.
When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, "There's no place for a dining room table..."

I hated her.
Now there's some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn't want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.
WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?
Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn't save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, "Ah, f*ck it," and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I'M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she's an idiot. But there's nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?
Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It's like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It's like the promised land. It's sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven't seen one rat since I've been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.
I'm supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I'm not sure I will.

The big thing I'm afraid of, however, isn't the growling—it's that Mary Margaret will poop in her bag. If she does poop, I've decided that I'm going to poop too, because me shitting myself will totally trump her shitting herself, right?

Just hours after debuting the movie's poster, a first-look theatrical trailer has been released for the upcoming film "The Ides of March".
The highly-anticipated picture stars Ryan Gosling and George Clooney, with Clooney also having written and directed the project shot mostly in Cincinnati, Ohio.
As for the storyline, "The Ides of March" is a drama about "an idealistic staffer for a newbie presidential candidate who gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail."
Boasting plenty of other big names including Marisa Tomei, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Evan Rachel Wood, Clooney's latest venture is set to hit theaters on October 7, 2011.

Maria Shriver was reportedly "shaken horribly" when a July 17 body-boarding accident left her 13-year-old son Christopher Schwarzenegger hospitalized with a collapsed lung, broken bones and broken ribs. But today, Shriver -- who recently filed for divorce from Christopher's dad, Arnold Schwarzenegger -- is in much better spirits because her son is back at home and on the mend.
"Blessed to be able to take Christopher out of the hospital last night," Shriver, 55, tweeted Tuesday. "What a feeling of relief to know that he's going to be fine. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. The whole family, especially Christopher, felt your love."
Arnold, 63, also chimed in over Twitter. "Thanks for all your support for Christopher," he wrote Monday night. "It means a lot to me & to him. He's doing much better & we'll have him back at full speed soon." On Tuesday, he added: "I knew Christopher couldn't be stopped! Big thanks to all the doctors, nurses & staff at UCLA that helped him recover."
Shriver had reportedly been at Christopher's bedside throughout his recovery, even sleeping at the hospital. And despite their impending divorce, following the revelation that Arnold had fathered a child with the family housekeeper, she and her estranged husband have been able to put aside their differences for Christopher's sake. "Arnold is a great father," an insider told People. "And he and Maria will always come together when it comes to supporting and loving their children."
Arnold may be the action hero in the family, but with the strength Shriver has shown these past few months, we're thinking she could give him a run for his money!

Has David Arquette moved on from estranged wife Courteney Cox? It sure looks that way. According to People, the Scream star stepped out with a new gal pal Christina McLarty -- the ex-wife of controversial Girls Gone Wild mogul Joe Francis -- while in San Diego, Calif., for Comic-Con over the weekend.
Arquette, 39, and McLarty were first spotted out and about together at a Camp Playboy event Friday night. And though wrestler Alicia Fox invited Arquette to another party, he opted instead to stay right where he was and, according to a witness, "danced the night away" with McLarty.
And that was just the beginning. The pair also got together to attend Entertainment Weekly's Comic-Con soiree on Saturday night. Are the two just pals, or are McLarty and Arquette going wild for each other?
We'll have to wait and see -- but this would be the first public relationship for Arquette since separating from Courtney Cox, 47, in October 2010 (though he did admit to Howard Stern that he had sex with another woman after splitting with Cox). While Cox has been linked to Cougar Town costars Josh Hopkins and Brian Van Holt, she has maintained that she's just friends with both.

Pushing forth with her Stateside radio tour, Lady Gaga was out for an interview with JoJo on KIIS FM in Los Angeles on Tuesday (July 26).
The "Edge of Glory" singer looked her usual fabulous self during the west coast outing while clad in a leopard print evening gown with red gloves and red velvet Christian Louboutin pumps topped off with a leopard print cape.
Also spotted out at Amp Radio in a bright blue ensemble, Gaga tweeted upon finishing up her press efforts, "Thank You KISS I love you Jo Jo! What a wonderful welcome to LA."
Prior to making her way to LA, Gaga stopped in Omaha, Nebraska to visit KAT 103.7 - during which time she spoke chat about the concept for her ?You And I? music video she shot last week in the Cornhusker State.
With the audio available below, the 25-year-old dished, "The premise of the video is that I?ve walked all the way from New York City to Nebraska to get [my boyfriend] back. I?m walking with no luggage, no nothin?. It?s just me, and my ankles are kind of bleeding a little bit and there?s grass stuck in my shoes. I?ve got this outfit on ? it?s real sort of New York clothing. It?s wooly.?

Has David Arquette moved on from estranged wife Courteney Cox? It sure looks that way. According to People, the Scream star stepped out with a new gal pal Christina McLarty -- the ex-wife of controversial Girls Gone Wild mogul Joe Francis -- while in San Diego, Calif., for Comic-Con over the weekend.
Arquette, 39, and McLarty were first spotted out and about together at a Camp Playboy event Friday night. And though wrestler Alicia Fox invited Arquette to another party, he opted instead to stay right where he was and, according to a witness, "danced the night away" with McLarty.
And that was just the beginning. The pair also got together to attend Entertainment Weekly's Comic-Con soiree on Saturday night. Are the two just pals, or are McLarty and Arquette going wild for each other?
We'll have to wait and see -- but this would be the first public relationship for Arquette since separating from Courtney Cox, 47, in October 2010 (though he did admit to Howard Stern that he had sex with another woman after splitting with Cox). While Cox has been linked to Cougar Town costars Josh Hopkins and Brian Van Holt, she has maintained that she's just friends with both.

This week, Ashley is in Fiji. She explains that Fiji is the "most romantic" archipelago, which is a serious slap in the face to all the other archipelagos out there who never did anything to deserve that. Ashley thinks Fiji is the perfect place to fall in love and find her husband.
First is Ben, who Ashley can "definitely" see herself falling in love with. Jenny McCarthy once confessed that she weighed over 200 lbs. while pregnant -- and now she's found a photo to prove it!
The 38-year-old TV personality has always had a killer bod -- she was Playboy's 1993 Playmate of the Year, for crying out loud! -- which is why fans were skeptical when she told Shape in 2009 about her huge pregnancy weight gain.
"I thought I might be 170 when I left the hospital, but no, I was 200," said McCarthy, who reached 211 pounds before son Evan was born in 2002.
That interview is now two years old, but it wasn't until Friday that the 5-ft.-7-in. McCarthy unearthed the evidence: the above photo of her pregnant belly, which she posted on Twitter.
"For anyone that doubted my 211 lbs at pregnancy here is a photo I found!" tweeted the star, joking, "Meaty meaty ass! Whoa!"

Recent news that Glee was cutting major players from its cast after season 3 had many Gleeks freaking out. But it seems the hysteria may have been a little premature.
On Sunday, executive producer Brad Falchuk said that fans aren't necessarily losing Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Golden Globe-winner Chris Colfer for good.
"They are not done with the show after this season," Falchuk confirmed at Comic-Con. "Because they're graduating doesn't mean they're leaving the show. If you have Lea Michele under contract, you don't just say, 'We're going to let you go.'"
"It was never our intention to let them go," Falchuk added. "They are not done with the show after this season."
Falchuk also shot down rumors that the trio may be heading to New York to film a spinoff. "That was something we were planting as a possibility, but we didn't get much further than that," he explained. "We're leaning against doing it. We certainly have explored it, but I think we're going to pass."
Unfortunately, the news of Chord Overstreet's departure is sticking, and all the shake-up rumors seem to have other cast members on edge.
"I may not be coming back for a fourth season," Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes told E! News. "Who knows? Whatever happens this third season is what happens, and I think everybody's OK with it...I love my job to pieces, but when it's time to go, it's time to go and, hopefully, there are greater things on the horizon."
