Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett's son Redmond O'Neal was arrested for heroin possession last week, one year after completing rehab. Redmond, 26, has struggled with drug-related legal problems for years -- but his dad says that the biggest challenge for Redmond now is coping with his mother's death.
On Thursday, Redmond went before a judge to plead not guilty to heroin possession and illegally possessing a firearm. (Police found a loaded gun when they searched his apartment.) The charges, which come on the heels of other drug convictions, could land Redmond in jail. Outside the courtroom, Ryan O'Neal explained that Farrah's death in 2009 had a devastating effect on their son.
"He never recovered from the loss of his mother," the 70-year-old actor told reporters. "That's the part that hurts the most. He doesn't know how to resolve it for himself, so he gets in trouble."
Redmond's half-sister Tatum O'Neal, also a recovering drug addict, attended the court session to support her brother.
"He's an addict," Tatum, 47, told the press. "Addicts keep using until they want to stop. We're praying for him every day."
The judge, who said Redmond's arrest was "part of an ongoing pattern," has ordered him to be held without bail until an August 24 hearing. At that point, it will be decided whether Redmond will go back to rehab -- or back to jail.
Redmond, Farrah Fawcett's only child, was incarcerated at the time of her death from cancer in June 2009.
