Sandra Bullock may have divorced Jesse James -- but he still has the power to put her in seriously awkward situations. Now that James has announced his engagement to Kat Von D, Bullock is stuck with the responsibility of preparing James' daughter Sunny for life with a new mommy. According to Popeater, Bullock is determined to do whatever will make her stepdaughter happiest -- even stepping out of the picture for a while.
"Sandra loves Sunny with all her heart and will always be in her life," a friend of Bullock's tells the website. "However, she also knows that [Sunny] will have a new mommy soon and will do whatever she needs to do to make sure Jesse's new wife and Sunny have a great relationship even if that means taking a step away."
Sunny, six years old, is James' daughter with his ex-wife, porn star Janine Lindemulder. Sunny was just a baby when Bullock and James married in 2005, and Sandra became a second mother to her. In fact, in 2009, Sandra became Sunny's primary mother, when Lindemulder was jailed for tax evasion. James and Bullock subsequently won full custody of Sunny, in part thanks to Bullock's emotional court testimony that she considered Sunny to be her own daughter. Even after James's revelation that he cheated, it was Bullock who took care of Sunny while her husband went off to rehab.
Jesse James understands his daughter's close relationship to Bullock: he moved to Austin so that Sunny wouldn't have to be separated from her ex-stepmother. Now Sunny is preparing for a third mother practically overnight, and Sandra doesn't want to put her through the emotional equivalent of another custody battle. But it's not easy on the actress.
"Sandra thought Jesse would never be able to hurt her again, but she was wrong," a source tells Popeater. "Despite what Jesse did, Sandra never walked away from Sunny…As difficult as this will be, once again Sandra will prove what a lady she is."
Bullock, who reportedly knew about Jesse and Kat's engagement before the rest of us, has a proven track record of handling difficult situations with grace. Given her father's erratic behavior, Sunny is lucky to have Sandra as a stabilizing force in her life. And hey, the whole situation could be worse: he could be marrying Michelle "Bombshell" McGee!
